Question
Case 3 Lynell recently came in to talk with the school psychologist because he was feeling depressed. After a few minutes, his conversation turned to his girlfriend Katonia: "Man, I am really in love with this girl, and I'd do anything for her. But she doesn't seem to appreciate it anymore. I remember when we were first dating. Every so often, I'd bring her flowers or a new disk, and she just loved it. So I'd bring her more and more stuff. But after a while, she stopped being nice to me every time. So I'd do even more things to make her happy. "These days she is nice to me only every once in a while, and I can never predict it. When she is cool to me, it's great, and I give her more stuff than ever. But for some reason, I am really depressed." From a behaviorist's perspective, what is going on in this relationship? What schedule of reinforcement is Katonia using on Lynell?Explanation / Answer
According to the behaviourists perspective, all behavior is learned from the environment. As per the girl stopped being nice to the boy,the boy did more things to make her happy. We learn new behavior through classical or operant conditioning. In this case when the girl stopped being nice she gets more attention, and more things that make her happy. This may be worked as reward to her.All behavior, no matter how complex, can be reduced to a simple stimulus-response association.
Katonia in this case is sometimes showing her coolness to reinforce Lynell to get more attention(reward).
