Question

A study was conducted to assess whether coffee drinking was associated with myocardial infarction in men under 55 years of age. Men under 55 years of age who were diagnosed with myocardial infarction (MI) were recruited from hospitals in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Men younger than 55 years of age without a previous diagnosis of myocardial infarction were recruited from a pool of patients at the same hospitals who were diagnosed with diseases not known to be related to coffee drinking. All of the study participants were interviewed to assess their past coffee drinking habits. The results did not reveal any important differences in coffee drinking habits between persons with and without myocardial infarction.

The possible influence of sleep-disordered breathing on self-reported general health status was the topic of the following study. A sample of men and women who were between 30 and 60 years old who were employed in state agencies in Wisconsin were selected to participate in the study. Those who participated came into the study center for an overnight polysomnography study to determine the presence of sleep-disordered breathing. At the same time, participants also completed an interview in which they reported their present health status. A total of 737 men and women participated in the study. The results showed that persons with sleep-disordered breathing tended to report lower health status than persons without sleep disordered breathing.
