In the Ebbinghaus memory research, he was trying to show that the higher processes carried out by the mind, could actually be shown by carrying out research. This line of thought was opposite to what has prevailed at that time. Earlier, it was thought that it is not possible to control the confounding variables while studying for these processes. Ebbinghaus had employed simple acoustic coding along with rehearsal maintenance by using a word list. Since, he knew that memory could be affected by prior learning, he used words that could be memorised at once.
He used the CVC method. The CVC method is the one in which words that have easy associations , which were later termed as nonsense syllables. The combination of “consonant-vowel-consonant” method had been used. In these words, the consonants would not be repeated and the syllable would not be having any meaning earlier meaning. The advantage of this method would be that there would be no interference with the prior knowledge and as a result, confounding variable would be eliminated.
This method was simple and using this method, there would be no cognitive associations present earlier, thus trying to keep the experiment as fair as possible.
