Question

The National Institute on Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) released the following data on infant day care: Children (ages 15 months to 36 months) in high-quality day care—care that provides a stimulating environment—do as well on cognitive and language tests as children who stay home with their mothers, regardless of how many hours a day they spend in such care. Mothers are slightly more affectionate and attentive to their children the higher the quality of the day care setting. Mothers are slightly more affectionate and attentive to their children the less time their children spend in day care (Azar, 1997). Consider the above statistics (remembering that "correlation does not equal causation.") Consider the pros and cons of daycare, from both the mother's and child's perspectives. What are the advantages and disadvantages of putting infants in daycare centers? How is daycare likely to influence an infant's cognitive and social/emotional development? Ultimately, does one side of the argument win out? What are some important milestones infants must accomplish?

Explanation / Answer

According to John Bowlbys Attachment theory children are influence greatly by their experiences that are formed with respect to the phenomena of attachment with a parental figure, poor attachment or a feeling of neglect generally predisposes children to stress and gradual depression in their adulthood.

Children who have good experiences with attachment with their parental figures do tend to develop a good cognitive ability and fair brighter in life, they are shown to be more emotionally and socially mature.

Infants, according to Erik Erkisons stages of development need to be able to form an outlook with respect to basic trust v mistrust that is formed on the basis of neglect and fulfillment. Children must be able to accomplish the former, which is basic trust in order to not have problem in their adult life and relationships.
