The Observation of Joey
The observation began at 3:00pm:
3:00pm Joey sat in on the shoreline with little boy B who appeared to beat least 6 years old playing with an action figure. Joey held the superman figure in the air pretending that he was flying. A wave came crashing in knocking Joey’s action figure into the water.
3:01pm Joey immediately started crying as he watched his figure get swept up into the water. Little boy B stood up and went a little further into the water to retrieve the figure. Once getting the figure back, Joey immediately became happy again, mumbling “thank you” to little boy B.
3:02pm Joey then continued to throw the action figure back into the water and looked at little boy B and began to cry again. Little boy B once again retrieved the toy from the water and returned it to him. Again, Joey threw the figure back into the water, looking at little boy B right after.
3:03pm Little boy B ignored Jayden and continued to play in the water. Joey began crying and screaming at him, looking at the figure sway further and further into the water. Joey, with a confused look on his face screamed “my toy” at the little boy who continued to ignore him. Joey then proceeded to go into the water on his own to retrieve the figure.
3:04pm Joey was immediately interrupted by his mother who picked him up and got the toy out of the water giving it to him. Once getting the toy Joey stuck out his tongue at little boy B and said “haha I got my toy” in a mocking voice.
3:05pm Joey and little boy B continued up the beach where he joined his mother on their blanket to have his snack. His mother asked whether he wanted apples or oranges. At first, he chose apples, but once little boy B chose an orange he began to cry requesting the orange from little boy B. His mother took the orange away and gave it to Joey. Joey replied “haha” and stuck his tongue out again.
Explanation / Answer
Joey throwing the toy and crying at the little boy B shows Freud's ID state which thrives on the pleasure principle and instant gratification. Joey keeps crying until what he wants is fulfilled. ID doesn't care about anything or anyone else except fulfilling whatever it wanted.
Joey getting into the sea water to get his toy is based in Albert Bandura's observational learning. Joey just started imitating B by trying to get into the sea water without knowing the danger his actions would bring.
Picking up oranges over apple is also kind of observational learning where Joey imitates B and holds his ID's pleasure principle.
