Adult attachment is one of the defining characteristics that help us understand adulthood. It differs from childhood attachment mainly because it involves relationships that lead to intimacy, mating, parenting, and security. To understand long-term relationships, which include the social construct of marriage, it is important to isolate the components that make the relationships unique. One way to explain adult relationships is through the convoy model.

Explain why the majority of adults get married. Describe how the views of adults regarding marriage change as they grow older.

Describe attachment theory with regard to adult attachment.

Describe the convoy model from a life span perspective by using specific examples from your own observations and personal life.

Compare and contrast the convoy model with the socioemotional model and explain which is more accurate in explaining relationships during adulthood.

Explanation / Answer

Answer- 1- The majority of adults get married due to different reasons. These reasons include emotional, financial, social and legal factors which encourage adults to get married. People want this relationship because they feel a need for permanent companionship, love and romance in their life. Some people have fear of being alone, so they choose to get married and find someone to spend their life with. There are some financial reasons also behind getting married like legal commitment of this reationship ensures the financial security for the spouse and children. At the same time, they have right on parents' property, retirement accounts etc.

There are some religious reasons also. In most of the societies, a couple needs to complete a religious ceremony named marriage otherwise the society does not accept their relatioship. Social pressure is also an important factor for getting married. People are pressurised to marry by their parents, relatives and other people who are married. So, we can conclude that majority of adults get married because of many reasons. It is very important for people to examine their partners before taking the decision of marriage.

Reasearches have found that that the views of people change as they grow older regarding marriage. Young adults have other priorities rather than marriage and children. They want to focus on their career and enjoy their life. But as they grow older, their priorities are changed and they consider that getting married and having children are essential to live a satisfied life and to be a part of a good society.

Answer-2- Adult attachment theory is based on the assumption that the motivation which creates the emotional bond between parents and their children is also responsible for the adults' emotionally intimate relationships. The theory of attachment was developed by a British psychoanalyst John Bowlby to understand attachment behaviours of infants with their parents and caregivers. However, Bowlby's ideas were also used in context of romantic relationships. Researchers Hazen and Shaver found that romantic relationships are attachment relationships because they share the same bond and feel secure with one another. Adult attachment theory is based on four attachment styles which are -Secure, Anxious- preoccupied, Dismissive-avoidant and Fearful -avoidant. According to adult attachment theory, all adult relationships do not have same outcomes. Some adults show more satisfaction while some are not satisfied with their relationships. Some couples stay together for a long time than the couples of other relationships. Attachment influences the satisfaction and duration of relationships.
