Question

Cognition and Intelligence
There are two choices for this question. Choose one question for your main post. Be sure to label which choice you selected in your main post. Please address all parts of the question in your main post. Besides your main post, you need to submit two or more replies to the main posts of classmates. You should post at least one reply to a classmate who answered the alternative question.

Choice 1
Your readings discuss heuristics and cognitive biases which affect our thinking, reasoning, and decision-making processes.
Develop one or two paragraphs that presents a one-sided, simplified argument about some psychological issue. Examples might be a) low self esteem causes bullying, b) parenting/nurture is more important than nature, c) repressed memory/ memory recall claims, d) low self esteem is the cause of low academic success, etc.
How did you use language, wording, and terminology to frame your one-sided argument?
What biases or mental short cuts were used in your explanations?
If you were presented with this argument, how could you refute the biases and suggest a more balanced explanation?
Choice 2
Some popular educational methods and products, claim that the use of certain highly stimulating methods, will help infants and small children develop greater levels of intelligence, creativity, and academic ability.
Identify one or more of these 'high success' methods, then describe how the method supposedly works?
What are the levels of success this product or method claims to achieve?
How much does this method/product seem to rely on personal stories/anecdotes, a single "independent" study, promotion by a well known celebrity, etc.
What is the actual "hard evidence" or scientific support for this method?
Assume there was some success using this method, what could be alternative explanations for its success?

Explanation / Answer

CHOICE 1:

Heuristics are mental shortcuts that an individual take to mak the cognitive process much easier. There are diffferent types of heuristics avaialable with the individual. If over-used these heuristics can also lead to cognitive biases in one's decision making and judgement.

There are two kind sof heuristics: the availability heuristic (chosing most easily available option) and the representative heuristic (banking upon the past experience). The biases can occur when the easy option isn't the best option available and when the thing that worked in past might not work in the present. An individual always need to use his/her own discretion in mking a judgement.

B) Parenting is more important than the environment in which the individual is born as social factors play a very important role in one's personality. The biopsychosocial model talks about how the biological factors, pschological factors and social factors affect an individual personality and growth, For example: If a child was born in a poor household but was adopted by an educated couple, there are high chances of the child to grow and become more educated, despite of his biological factors

Jung also talked about collective unconscious where the culture and myths are transferred to an individual through societal norms and language. One's socialisation process include transferring of culture too. Therefore, parenting plays a bigger role in developing one's lifestyle.

the language , wording and terminology used here was based on my childhood normal development of language which got incorporated in my mind permanently. Now everytime i talk, i don't need people to tell me the appropriate word. I myself have asimilated and accoodated the knowledge in my childhood through experience and learning.

Mental shortcuts used were: My previous knowledge, availability of that knowledge, appropriate recall of the learning, mental recall cues for the information

If i had to refute than i would focus more on the intelligence researches done on twins where it has clearly been shown that genetic factors play a huge role in one's intelligence.
