Review the 25 Techniques of Situational Prevention.
Consider the following scenario: You are the owner of a convenience store which has been robbed at gunpoint four (4) times in the past six (6) months. The suspect comes late at night when there is substantial cash in the register drawer, comes through the poorly lit back door near the business office, points the gun at the clerk and demands all of the cash, Newport cigarettes and a plastic bag. He takes the clerk’s cell phone and locks him in the restroom before leaving the store.
Use the 25 Techniques to identify and explain possible ways to increase the effort and risks, reduce the rewards, reduce provocations and to remove excuses.

Explanation / Answer
Amongst the available 25 techniques of prevention of crimes, it is analysed that the following techniques could prove effective in controlling future occurance of robbery in the store:
Techniques to increase effort:
Target hardening which involves use of ‘ burglary proof screens’ on the cashier counter, steering column locks and immobilisers on the back door are some of the measures that can help provide protection to the store staff against attacks.
controlling tools/ weapons such as using ‘ stun guns’ in case of any attack can help to ensure defence against the offenders.
Techniques that increase the risk for the burglars:
Improving natural surveillance such as by ensuring adequate street lights at night, defensible space designs which make it difficult to go incognito and avoid being spotted in public.
Increasing store surveillance such as by incorporating two instead of one store employees at night, installing red cameras and burglar alarms at the counter can help take immediate actions in case of any suspicious presence in the store and take timely action against any robbery.
Techniques that reduce the rewards of theft:
Placing an identity Marking on the cigarette packaging and the paper bags, tracking devices on the phone that are demanded the next time the robber comes can help in later police investigation and tracing the involved criminal.
The techniques of provocation in such a case are less likely to give any fruitful results as there is no confrontation between groups rather it is a case of threat to life and property posed by a single individual. Reducing Provocation would therefore be a weak strategy of preventing crime.
Remove excuses:
Posting signs that alert conscience such as ‘taking somebody’s hard earned money by force is like stealing someone’s child’ or other such messages which appeal to the moral values against stealing can hopefully induce some apprehensions about repeated acts of theft by the responsible person. However, this strategy may or may not help to prevent the future occurance of the crim.
