Question
This week's focus is on feminism. I am attaching two videos that essentially encapsulates some of the main issues involved in understanding feminism. Please read the course material for this theme and along with the videos answer these questions for yourself.
1. What is feminism to you?
2. Can only women be feminists?
3. How do you think of black feminism in light of the three types of oppressions faced by them? Race, class and gender?
4. Do you believe that feminism is divisive? Why or why not?
5. Focus on Kimberley Crenshaw's idea if intersectionality to see if it helps us to understand the nature of racial, sexual and economic oppression for black women

Explanation / Answer
1. Feminism, according to me, is a movement to ensure equality in all respects for men and women, without any gender receiving more privilege than the other.
2. Feminism is not restricted only to women and men can be feminists too, without it having anything to do with their supposed masculinity.
3. Black feminists are a highly vulnerable section of society as they face oppression in various forms. Moreover, a black woman would face even more struggles asserting her rights as feminism may not even be recognised as a valid movement in their society.
4. I do not believe that feminism is divisive because the true essence of the movement is to fight against inequality. Unlike the common perception that involves the liberation of women over men, feminists simply argue for a equal status in society which is the opposite of wanting to create a discord in social harmony.
Please post the other questions separately as we are supposed to answer just one question or four sub parts of a question.
