Motivating Nurses at a Hospital
You have been hired by the director of a large suburban hospital to help resolve problems of poor morale that have been plaguing the nursing staff. Unfortunately, the nurses don’t find their jobs particularly interesting. As a result, turnover and absenteeism have been high, and patient care is at an all-time low. The problem is apparent to everyone; both doctors and patients have been complaining.
1. After interviewing the nurses, you found that they believed that no one cared how well they were doing. What theories could help explain this problem?

In the present case, it is mentioned that the nurses are not finding their job interesting due to which there is high absenteeism (uninformed voluntary absence during working hours) and employee turnover (withdrawal of employee from the job per year).This situation is evident in their job perforrmance as there is low patient care as well. In the light of various theories job performance can be explained particularly taking Herzberg's theory of job motivation and performance(1959) In this situation the nurses are experiencing low motivation due to lack of motivating factors like: achievement opportunity, employee involvement in decision making, nature of work (whether challenging or monotonous, makes complete use of employee's skill,sense of importance), all these factors combine to motivate employees to perform well.
Another theory given by Douglas Mc. Gregor etal (1960) theory y, asssumes that workers are basically internally motivated to work on a particular job, managers should build better relationship with their staff and create a healthy and involve employees to plan work. The manager must have a democratic approach of leadership in cordinance with the workload and time limits.
