Question 1: This week you listened to two concert overtures by Tchaikovsky, "Romeo and Juliet," and the "1812 Overture". Which of these two concert overtures do you feel did a better job of "telling the story?" and why so? Choose ONE of these two overtures, and explain/describe what specific musical techniques Tchaikovsky uses to convey the story.
Question 2: I posted eight movements from Tchaikovsky's, "The Nutcracker." Which movements did you like/dislike? Had you heard any of these movements before? If so, which movements?
Question 3: Compare Brahms' "Symphony No. 3" (3rd movement) with Santana's "Love of My Life." How are they similar and/or different? (hint: carefully listen to the meter and melody of each). Please discuss.

1)Tchaikovsky was a music composer from Russia and was born in 1840. He took lessons in piano in school. He became a professor at the Music conservatory and composed music with operas, ballets , vocal music,harp, violin, flute, saxophone, trumpet instruments for a variety of themes like Romeo and Juliet, 1812 Overture and Nutcracker. Nutcracker tune theme is common and is played every year in Russia. These tunes are common in orchestra and music theatre throughout the world. Overture 1812 is famous and displays themes for the musical performance. The overture 1812 is better as it displays clarinet and bassoon melody which depicts Friar Lawrence. It depicts the violence between the Capulet and Montague families. It represents love theme and romance.
2) Nutcracker is a ballet performance with various dance foot steps with proper orientation and body balance. It depicts the movements with maintenance of center of gravity and moment of inertia. It depicts the corps rhythms with flow of sound, movement,weight and tension on the body. There is rhythmic sound with a sequential playing of the different instruments in a proper sequence. It depicts the story of a beautiful princess saved by a prince and taken to his homeland. The story proceeds ahead to the sugar of plum with the prince narrating his battle with army of mice anf finally the girl depicting the different footsteps in ballet to entertain him.
3) The difference between the Brahms Symphony No.3 and Satana Love is that there is change of key from C to G, the meter length is changed from 3 to 4, long notes are syncopated, the difference is evident in the last part of the beat rather than in the first beat. There is difference between Santana Love and Brahms symphony is that Santana splits and breaks the themes into three parts with introduction of the theme in parts 1-8, bars are from 5-8 and 9-12 includes the chorus. Santana is played on the electric guitar later after the initial Brahms symphony. In Brahms there is an anacrusis sound with quaver and semiquaver rhythms with long notes in first beat of the bar whereas in the Santana Love rhythms there is a long note with quaver . There are inversions, crotchets and ovtave syncope sounds with extended long notes in Santana Love themes.
