Question
It is often said there is an "art and science" of clinical interviewing. Do you think art or science should play the primary role in the interview process? What is the value of each? In formulating your response, you might consider what factors in the interview (or in the clinician conducting the interview) would be important if YOU were a client undergoing a clinical interview. At the same time, what factors would be important if you were the clinician responsible for gathering the information?
Explanation / Answer
Clinical interviewing is important for the diagnosis of symptoms by the doctor on a patient which includes the randomized clinical trials and evidence based practice. It is based on the reliability of treatment by the patient on the double blind standards followed by the doctor when he prescribes a treatment for the patients with full belief on the effects of the prescribed drugs. Nowdays there are much better prospects for the diagnosis of diseases and analysis of the symptoms by the doctor which includes a set of individual personal interviews, brief history of the symptoms of the patient, case study of the history of the prevalent disease in the family and observation of the symptoms of the patient with recording in the medical file. Buetow and Kenealy proposed that the evidence based practice should be supported by experiential, practical and observational evidences to support the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The statistical survey was organized in the Veterans Health administration (VHA) which included a set of interviews by psychologist, psychiatrist and a social worker in the society. The interview involved the use of software like Atlas and use of sub-codes for identifying the healthcare policies according to the need of the patient, the available circumstances and the art of medicine in curing the diseases prevalent in the people in the society. A strong concern was shown to make people aware of the health care insurance policies for the elderly people in the society. The records of the patients were recorded and printed in the form of books with index numbering of the case records. If in a situation I had the opportunity of taking consultation from a doctor then the important parameters include the analysis of the questions and answers in an indirect way and approach, indirect linking of questions and maintenance of the confidentiality of the patient involved in the survey. The important factors and parameters for the clinician or doctor are:
