Question

Paragraplh Font (5) shelly is in the grocery store with her dad. As they near the checkout lane, Shelly starts whining for a candy bar but her dad says no. Shelly begins to cry and cries louder when her dad continues to refuse. At the checkout lane, in front of the cashier, Shelly throws herself onto the floor and begins screamning. Her dad responds by grabbing a candy bar and giving it to her. She quickly quiets down and eats her candy bar. This exchange gets repeated on subsequent trips to the grocery store. Classical or operant? Operant conditioning What is Shelly's behavior in this example? What kind of consequence follows her behavior? What is dad's behavior in this example? What kind of consequence follows his behavior? How should dad handle this situation differently? (6) Your bright cat has learned that your presence in the kitchen is associated with food. Your cat has also learned that he can encourage your presence in the kitchen on Saturday mornings by standing on your chest and meowing (when you are obviously trying to sleep). You decide to get up and feed the cat to shut it up, but the problem only gets worse on subsequent weekends. Classical or operant? (Be careful with this one!) You know the drill. If it's operant, what kind of consequence is involved? If it's classical, what are the assorted stimuli and responses?

Explanation / Answer

5.

A) This is a form of operant conditioning.

B) In this example, Shelly’s behavior is in the form of throwing a fit. She has started whining for the bae candy and begins to cry louder and louder even after her dad is refusing. She is throwing herself on the floor and starts screaming. This is followed by her dad succumbing to her demand as a result of the humiliation.

C) Dad’s behavior is buying be a candy so that she would stop crying and stop her behavior. The consequence following this behavior is rhar Shelly stops crying and quickly calms down and starts eating her candy. This is a form of behavior that has been reinforced negatively.

D) he could have handled this situation differently by taking his stand and not giving her the candy in any possible manner. This would encourage the child to repeat the behaviour every time she goes to the grocery store in order to get a candy bar. If this behavior would not have been encouraged, it would have been extinguished eventually and she would not have repeated this behavior. Rather, the father could have calmed her down and rewarded her for being quite and behaving properly.
