Question

Suppose you've been asked by the governor of a large state to advise her on proposed legislation aimed at using public resources, including tax revenue raised from workers in the state, to ease the extent of economic inequality. Further suppose that the governor must decide whether to authorize or veto a bill establishing a range of public programs that, when implemented, will somewhat extend the state's policy of reallocating wealth from the most well-off (who will be subject to a small additional tax on their incomes) to the least well-off (who will receive an increase in direct cash transfers, housing allowances, nutritional support). In view of the assigned readings and other materials examined in Week 5 of IDST 400, what criteria – i.e., by what moral philosophical standardscouldthis legislation be evaluated in terms of its "justness?" When crafting your answer, consider alternative points of view explored in the materials assigned in Week 5. Finally, by what moral philosophical standards should this legislation be evaluated in terms of its "justness?" Explain your answer carefully, supporting your ideas with references to assigned materials. [5 points for initial post, 5 points for responses to classmates; total of 10 pts possible]

Explanation / Answer

This thought of spending the resources to gain economic equality is a very good thought. But it has to carefully, consider few points which are

1. Direct and indirect taxes should be properly paid.

2. There should be no corruption and tax evasion by the common people and the Government.

3. Lots of projects for the job creation, infrastructure should be created and sought for speedy completion.

4. Tax brackets should be increasing from poor to rich.

If the above points are done practically, only then it will be just as per the philosophical standards. It should not be like Robin hood policy, where only the rich are taxed, as it would be unfair for them. They have earned their riches and its not a crime to be rich. It is also equally important that common people and Government officials work without any tax evasion and corruption, considering the development of the country.
