(Answer) In the year 1757, the East-India Company was established in India. This was done by the then British commander-in-chief named Robert Clive. He settled in India for the purpose of trade. Several regions of the world coveted the indigo, silk, spices and other commodities that India exported at the time.
The East-India Company began with a view to facilitate trade between India and the British Empire. However, after the battle of Plassey that was fought between Clive and the then Nawab of Bengal called, Sijar-ud-daulah. Clive’s victory helped the British take over the region and convert the trade into an imperial empire.
This empire went on to rule the country for about 200 years. This resulted in India absorbing parts of the English and Portuguese cultures along with the already rich amalgamation of the Hindu and Mughal cultures. The country’s official language is English, with a large Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh population along with several other major religions. The Anglo-Indian culture still survives with its influence evident in the language, architecture and traditions even today. This is how trade, migration, politics and wars together managed to contribute to the diversity of India.
