(Answer) The women’s march has been one of the most prominent protests in America. One of the movements on the forefront has been the “Times Up” campaign. It is called so because; the protesters express how they feel that it is “time up” for abusive or sexually inappropriate behaviour to go unpunished or unchecked. The campaign was recently taken up by film stars like America Ferrera, Natalie Portman and others. However, it was a continuous cause that was spearheaded by Tarana Burke who began the “Me Too” movement.
It is a movement that the women in the entertainment industry have been running. They are actually leveraging their resources and platform to improve the condition of women in all industries. The movement has even set up a legal defense fund that helps both men and women fight their legal cases of harassment.
The “Times Up” campaign has several other women’s charities that are affiliated with it and the “Me too” movement. There have been a few media outlets and organisations that do not particularly support the protests. However, each protest that is conducted would have to follow certain ethical rules. Some of these rules might entail, not inciting hate, avoiding violence, avoiding the destruction of property, attaining warrants to make certain formal changes and other legalities. If these rules are broken by a protester or group, the law would have to intervene. On social media and during the protests, such rules have not yet been broken and hence they do not permit legal actions.
Every protest would have to follow certain legal guidelines, the basis of which is to not cause harm to any individual or group. Since the basic purpose of the “Times Up” campaign is to seek justice for the individuals who have been abused and violated. Therefore, such a protest would be quite justified. Censorship for such protests that seek to provide justice would only hurt the business of the organisation that demands it.
