Question
This discussion is a role-play in which you will demonstrate your knowledge of the active listening and the difference between empathy and sympathy. Imagine how you would feel in the following situation (below). Answer the question as honestly as possible. Your basic circumstances are the same as they are right now. (For instance, if you are single and have no children, your role play character is single and has no children. If you have children and/or a significant other, you are in that circumstance. You are the same age you are now and have the same basic values and personality characteristics.) The only thing that may be different is your life circumstances. In other words, do not try to imagine yourself as someone else. Situation: Imagine that you are sitting in the waiting room of your local county welfare office. Things have gone very wrong for you lately and you are now completely out of money and are at risk of being homeless. You were told that new applications are taken only early in the morning on certain days and that people are taken on a first come, first serve basis. You arrived on time on the correct day and are now waiting your turn in the crowded rather dingy waiting area. Your Initial entry should include the following: 1. What are the thoughts and feelings running through your mind as you wait your turn? 2. What would an empathetic worker say to you when you explain why you have come to the welfare office? 3 What active listening skills did the worker demonstrate or not demonstrate during your initial interview?
Explanation / Answer
1. The thoughts and feelings that would be running through the mind would be about providing a home for my family that includes two kids, of which one is a differently abled child suffering from mental retardation and cerebral palsy. The other worries would finding a good job that would aid in dealing the current financial crisis, and would be enough to provide for the educational needs of kids and the other expenses of the family.
2. Empathetic worker would listen attentively to the problem, without judging and offering solution quickly. The worker would reflect upon the level of pain and anxiety, and offer a solution that would suit the requirements.
3. The worker actively and attentively listened my problem. Was compassionate and assessed the current situation without being judgmental, interrupting unnecessarily and offering quick solutions. The worker reflected on the seriousness of the problem and offered a good solution for the homelessness and financial crisis.
