Explanation / Answer

Its guilt ridden people of Omelas who walk away never to return. Richness and beauty of Omelas’-the city described as “ bright towered by the sea”) people is based on the suffering of one innocent child who lives beneath the city in a windowless room with darkness and squalor. This child is the living sacrifice that allows the rest of the city to live with happiness and peace. “ Happiness is based on a just discrimination of what is necessary, what is neither necessary nor destructive, and what is distructive”. Now there are some people who cannot reconcile the child’s suffering with their own comfort and they leave the Omelas quietly to embark on solitary journey out of the city.

Those choosing to stay are able to overcome their guilt, some of them continue their daily businesses in the rooms above child’s locked room while ignoring his wretched existence by considering as a mere fact of life. To these people, beauty and luxury of their life justifies the child’s tyranny. Others include those who leave when they first hear of the child, others leave by fighting with their guilt for months and years. People leave as they cannot bear the fact that for their happy lives, a child is in extreme pain. These people could not teach themselves to accept the child’s misery for their own happiness- They leave Omelas , they go in to the darkness and they do not come back”
