Given the choice between Athens or Sparta, I would definitely choose to live in Athens. Athens was the most culturally developed city in Greece. Unlike Sparta, education was not focused on simply learning the basics of language and music. Children in Athens were sent to school to become philosophers. Furthermore, Athens was a democracy and it’s people had greater political rights than in Sparta. In Athens the social divisions were not very strict and each estate (oikos) was part of a democratic system.
