Question
Read https://essay.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/09/26/two-years-are-better-than-four/ then answer: What do you know about the author? Why is this important? Who is Addison’s “they say”? What did this “they say” say? What information or context was missing for you during Addison’s introduction that would have helped to better understand her “they say?” What is Addison’s thesis? Find at least three signal phrases Addison uses to distinguish between they say and I say. What are they, and which – they say or I say – do they signal? Add a “naysayer” to a paragraph of Addison’s essay. Write the naysayer sentence(s) below using a template from your book and indicate where in her essay you would put them.
Explanation / Answer
The author is a 38 years old lady who is a biology major and aspires to become an animal veterinarian. Her interest in American presidential history makes this case important to analyse beacause this shows her views about education system and colleges there.
'They say' signifies Mr. Perlstein and friends. Their view is that today's colleges and its systems have changed and they 'no longer holds importance' in terms of learning, values and self-disovery as they used to be earlier.
If author would have added information, education backround and a synopsyis of their life, it would have become easier and better to anaylise and facts could have been comapred from both the sides. The author's thesis is that the dream can still be lived of American education system via community colleges.
The three signal phrases are - '...they mourn for both the individual and society. Yet, arguably, the community college experience is more critical to the nation than that of former beatnik..."
"...Enter on empty and leave with a head full of dreams? How can Mr. Perlstein say college does not matter anymore?.."
"...Oh, I wanted desperately to say, please tell him about community college. Please tell him that hope can begin with just one placement test..."
