Question

A drug company is advertising a new drug that helps people recover from jet lag faster. You are skeptical, so you conduct an experiment to test their claim. In your experiment, 100 people are flown from San Francisco to Tokyo. During the flight, half the participants are randomly given the drug company's new drug. The other half of the participants are given a placebo (i.e., sugar pill) during the flight. Six hours after they land, all participants are asked to rate how sleepy and disoriented they feel on a scale from 1 to 10. The IV was bivalent. Explain how you can make it multivalent.

Explanation / Answer

The above experiment is conducted to understand the effect of independent variable on the dependent variable. Independent variable (a new drug and sugar pill [placebo]) is manipulated by the experimenter in two ways, in order to see its effects on the dependent variable. Since the independent variable is manipulated in two ways, it is bivalent. In order to make the independent variable multivalent, the experimenter could use the new drug’s equivalents to see what effect does the original drug and it’s equivalents have on individuals recovering from jet lag.
