Question
In Gilman's view, "women's work" -- the work that women do as a function of their roles as wives, mothers, or daughters -- is lonely and demeaning. To the extent that it is experienced in this way, why do you think it is (think beyond any individual woman's particular predilections to the way this work is socially organized)? Does it have to be? Are there government or corporate policies, institutionalized social practices, or even ideologies that that would help make the traditional division of labor less alienating for women? I suppose this view of womenly work has changed a lot, even men these days are doing this work. But this view has not changed in may cultures, many families. Even though this view is prevelant, many families do not practise this in house. Many women esp, wives continue to work all alone in the kitchen doing this household job. This household work is a demeaning work if done continously for years all alone. If there is a company to help then it can become a joy.
There no government policies as such, but there is women reservation quota at work place, which raise hopes for women to work. Many corporate /IT companies they make special schemes such as providing pick and drop cab facility, flexible work hours, which again encourages a woman to get away from the kitchen household work. But idelologies, news papwr write ups etc are helping women more to work instead of govt policies. Such men and women should work equally, even men should help at house hold work which would lessen the burden of a woman. Even men should take of care kids including babies, and look after them. Doing work equally gives more joy than working all alone.
