Question

Please read the following article: http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/life/wellness/2014/05/19/study-women-men-delay-seeking-health-care/9305339/ 1. Are you surprised by these findings? (Do they contradict anything we talked about in class?) 2. Other than what the article notes (low SES, other priorities, etc.) what else might account for why women tend to delay seeking treatment more than men? 3. How would you describe these women psychosocially? Explanation / Answer

1. I’m not surprised with the findings because by nature women are more considerate about others and they put others before them. It’s true especially with the working class women who works hard and do not find enough time to go to the doctor because if they have to go, they will have to lose a day’s wage thus risking their daily expenses for food.

2. Women are generally strong, although the society has labelled them as weak sex. Women bear the pain and do things calmly without showing their discomfort or stress to anyone. They will be still considering their family members when they make decisions, so they will be able to bear the pain and delay the treatment.

3. When it come to their psychosocial dimension, women are expected to care and help their family and put the family’s needs before them. Women are expected to behave in a way that will show that they sacrifice everything for the family and those around them. Thus a woman sacrifices her needs and even the medical needs for the betterment of the family.
