Question

Three organizations (A, B, and C) were developed recently.  Each of the organizations makes and serves ice cream. In addition, they each have a very committed workforce.  Organization A has a workforce that are all affectively committed; organization B’s workers all score high on the continuance commitment scale, and those that work for organization C are all high in normative commitment. If the three organizations continue with the employees as they are, what will happen? Which would be most successful and why?

Explanation / Answer

Employees who are affectively committed to the organization would strongly identify themselves with the organization's goals. This would make them work harder and there would be very less rates of attrition. The employees would desire to remain there for the betterment of the organization.

The employees who have high scores on continuance commitment are commited because of monetary reasons. Therefore, in the long run there might be issues with attrition if they are not compensated well for their hardwork. Also their levels of commitment might decline if there is no hike in their salary.

Employees who are normatively committed to their organization are working because they feel that without their presence the organization would be at a loss and that they are obliged to work in the organization. In the long run such employees might get arrogant at work and might show low levels of commitment.

The most successful lot will the organization A, who are affectively committed. This is because they are emotionally committed to the organization's vision and would therefore be with the organization in its good and bad times.
