Question
Please answer 3 of the questions below. Answer each of your 3 questions in about a paragraph (unless otherwise stated).
1. Not everything that is sensed is perceived. Discuss 1 concept or example from the chapter which demonstrates this. In other words, what concept/example from the chapter involves sensing information, but not consciously perceiving it?
2. One of your friends just read about congenital insensitivity to pain, and says that it great not to feel any pain. Use what you've learned about pain in Chapter 5 to convince him he is wrong.
3. Jimmy is kind-of a slob. He doesn’t ever throw out his trash, and he also doesn’t shower very often. Because of this, Jimmy usually smells pretty bad! Every time Jimmy’s roommate, Todd, comes home, he always notice’s Jimmy’s smell. However, after being home for about 20 minutes, Todd can’t smell Jimmy’s grossness anymore. In 1-2 sentences, explain why can’t Todd smell Jimmy’s grossness anymore.
4. Signal Detection Theory states that our ability to detect/sense a stimulus changes as a result of a mental state. Describe your own example (not one from the book) of your mental state changing your ability to detect a stimulus (it would be best if you used one from your own life). In this example, make sure you mention the stimulus you are trying to detect and the mental state (e.g., tiredness, drunkness, etc.) that is effecting your ability to detect.
5. In the image below, you should be able to see a cube (a 3-D square). Name the 2 Gestalt Principles of Perception our minds are using in order to see that cube. In your response, describe/define each principle, and how it applies to the image below.
Explanation / Answer
1.
Sensation is a primary feeling of stimulus. When our sense organ feels an external stimulus then this process can be called as sensation. But not everything that is sensed is also perceived. When we realize the sensation or give attention towards the sensation its became a perceived matter or thing. Perception can also be defined as meaningful sensation.
If we do not perceive a stimulus then it generally becames an unknown factor and sometime it can be forgotten also.Sometime that kind of stimulas stays on our unconscious mind and we can recall if we try hardly (but its rear). We can find this from the chapter of Perception.
For example
A student in the class senses the lession whatever teacher had discussed but didn't try to realize or pay attention in that particular lession, then that lession can be forgotten or can be stored in the unconscious

Congenital Insensivity to Pain
Congential insensivity is a condition in where a person unable to feel any kind of pain.Main cause of this Congenital Insensivity is Mutation and heredity .People with this condition cant able to sense any kind of sensation. You might be thinking that it is great not to feel any pain but do you know that it has some dengerous ill effects such as
So after discussing i hope you are now able to understand how much dengerous it can be. So it should not be taken for granted, if a patient is suffering from this kind of issues, she or he must go to a doctor before its too late.

After seeing this 3-D square cube, my mind is connecting with two major principles of perception which are proposed by Gestalt. These two principles are 1)Principle of Proximity and 2) Principle of Similarity
Principle of Proximity
According to Gestalt, Objects that are close to each other appear as a group. Not only that Gestalts also stated that, we have the tendency to perceive closer objects as a group. This picture of 3D Square Cube also has squares which are close to each other and it also can perceived as a whole figure not as individual Square figure. So after seeing this picture i can concluded that it is describing the principle of Proximity.
Principle of Similarity
Some objects which are similar by shapes, colors and sizes can be perceived as a group. We have the tendency to perceive similar things as a group.
Here in the picture of 3D Square cube , We can also perceive same sqaure figures as a group not as an individual sqaure figure. This is describing the Principle of similarity.
