The hypothalamus in the brain controlls the circadian rythym, the hypothalamus contolls the daily sleep rythyms and bodily rythyms. The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which is located in the hypothalamus receives signals about light and dark through the retina of the eye. When light hits the retina, the photoreceptor cells in the retina pass on the information to the suprachiasmatic nucleus with the help of neurons of the retinohypothalamic tract.
The signals are then passed on to the pineal gland, a structure which is located in the centerof the brain is responsible for the secretion of the harmone melatonin. The melatonin is secreted when darkness is detected, and hen light is detected the secreation of melatonin stopps. Melotonin is responsible for induction of sleep, and helps people fall asleep.
