Homophobia is seemingly a much more pressing issue for male athletes than for female athletes. The obvious difference between both the parties of a similar background being provided with different levels of media coverage is mostly attributed to sexism. The fact that one is a male and other is a female tended to bring different level of acceptance for both, especially given that they belong to this field. We stood up and chose to hear the man, while blissfully ignore the female. The underlying fact remains that our notions of sexuality and gender roles are still deeply linked.
