Explanation / Answer

The Empathy triad consists of three levels that would teach the ways of being empathetic. The levels are:

1) Happiness level: This level would let the child, (who needs to learn to be empathetic), compare the feelings of another person/persons to the child's own feelings. The child would then realise the degree of happiness or sadness that the child is experiencing and would then try to bridge the gap.

2) Inner Strength level: This is about the level of self confidence, self esteem and self concept that the child has in comparison to another or others. A child would be able to empathize with others only if he/she has enough security about themselves, confidence on their strengths and a positive self esteem. Insecure children will not be able to empathise with others due to lack of inner strength.

3) Outlook level: Here, the child would look at the position in which the child is from the situational/environmental point of view. The child compare his/her situation with another/others and then analyse his/her own stance. This would make the child realise each other's positions and thereby act accordingly.

The child, after comparing the three situations should come to a conclusion to see who is in a better position, the child himself/herself or the other person/persons with whom the child was trying to empathise. Accordingly the child would be able to balance the act and decide if he/she needs to respond or react in this conflict.

Jean Piaget developed the four stages of cognitive development, namely the sensorimotor, pre operational, concrete operational and formal operational period. This theory proposed the idea of ages in stages of childhood development, where every stage has common sets of milestones achieved by children belonging to that particular age group. A parent uses this theory to teach children empathy by making them understand and realise the common capabilities of children based on their levels of development. This would make the child understand others and think outside their experience. According to this theory, a child can start feelings of empathy from a mere age of about two when the child reaches the pre operational stage.

Vygotsky's theory on the other hand, focuses on the role of culture in the development of higher mental functions such as reasoning in children. He emphasised on social interactions which make a child learn. He said that higher mental processes have their origin in social processes. Parents can use this theory to help children learn empathy by having them in their social interactions and in the process conveying the importance of being empathetic so that the child understands empathy as a positive social behaviour and integrates it in his/her cognition.

Social learning theory however, believes that children learn from others through observation, imitation and modeling. Here, learning is taken as a cognitive process and that it occurs through observation. Children learn from what they see others doing. Parents can use this theory to make children learn empathy by themselves being the role model from whom their children can learn empathy. Children would observe their parents behaviour and thereby try to imitate such behaviour in future. Parents can also make children read books with such morals and watch shows that would make the child emulate and learn empathy.
