Music and Nationalism:
Music can do wonders in ones life. It has a strong connection with one's mood and feelings. This may last for a little while or forever. In the case of nationalist ideas too, music reflect them well in different parts of Europe and America.
Ethnic groups use music to promote togetherness, in group favouritism and traditional values. Many musical pieces also favour intergroup closeness and understanding. European American music has claimed a melting pot on nationalist basis with the 'New World' symphony (1893), blending 'Negro' melodies, Indianist idioms, European based styles and Afro American symphonies.
All nationalist music has folk idioms which are claimed as national heritage. Opera and program music easily became music with nationalist themes. Nationalist music often spoke about the exotic 'others' in order to bring a sense of assimilation. In the twentieth century Holocaust, ethnic cleansing witnessed an early instance of musical discourse in Wagner's essay which helped give nationalism a racial profile that it never lost.
European nationalism, especially in Germany and Italy led to the two world wars. As a result, some victims fled to the United States and established the American scholarly tradition in musicology. The most convincing plot of musical nationalism is the American musical, both for the stage and the films. Nationalism has formed a base for cultural and political framework for musical expression in Europe and America.
