Question
How come despite spending billions of dollars pharmaceutical companies are not able to find 'the magic bullet' to cure mental disorders? (Note: your response must focus only on the biological/anatomical/physiological aspects. Any response that is based on social/economic factors will not be accepted. In the past some students focused on expressing views on how evil the pharmaceutical companies are and they deliberately refuse to find the magic bullet because it is not in their economic interest. Those students received score of zero for this RT)
Explanation / Answer
Despite the significant advancements made in medicine and technology, our understanding of the brain remains limited. The brain is an incredibly complex organ and its underlying processes are extremely intricate. Abnormalities in brain structure and function along with aberrant neural transmission are often implicated as causes of several mental disorders. However, we are yet to develop a holistic theoretical understanding of all the abnormalities and aberrations that together contribute to a disorder. To attain this, we would first need to discern all the aspects of the how our brain works. Until this happens, I believe that coming up with a magic bullet to cure mental disorders is impossible, because the bullet would not precisely know what it should be targetting in the first place.
