Psychology Question

Please compose answer in 100-200 words.

A psychologist randomly divides patients experiencing social anxiety into three groups, each of which receives a different treatment believed to reduce social anxiety. A research assistant, who knows nothing about the study, measures each patient's level of social anxiety using a standard questionnaire once before and once after their treatment. The psychologist analyzes the data afterwards, and finds that group 3 is the only group who showed a reduction in their social anxiety scores, from pre-treatment to post-treatment. 1 Is this an experiment? Why or why not? 2. Identify the independent and dependent variables 3. How are potential confounds minimized in this design? Explain your answer. 4.Can the psychologist conclude that the treatment administered to Group 3 caused a reduction in their social anxiety scores? Justify your answer.

Explanation / Answer

1. This is a true experiment, as random assignment of participants to groups is done, and the independent variable is administered to see its effect on the dependent variable. There are three groups in this study and each is administered a different independent variable.

2. The independent variable is the different treatments which the patients with social anxiety get. Each groups gets different treatment, and there are three levels of independent variable. The dependent variable is the social anxiety level, as measured on the standardised questionnaire.

3. The potential confounds are minimised by random assignment of the participants o each of three groups. The research assistant does not know anything about the experiment, which helps in avoiding any bias towards the subject from the assistants side, and also helps in avoiding expectation bias from the subjects side.

4. The researcher can conclude that the treatment for group three worked as there is reduction in the social anxiety scores only in that group from the pre to post condition.
