There's so much happening around us in a particular moment, we cannot absorb everything happening around us. We need to lay our attention on a particular thing at a particular time. We need to attend to things which is possible through selection. We select the things we want to pay heed to. Selection occurs through attention, which plays a very important role in memory.
Primary memory refers to where the information gets stored first. Primary memory is also known as working memory or short-term memory. It's called working memory because, it's working towards encoding the information first, then storing it and eventually retrieving the information stored. Information is first received at short-term memory. Short-term memory can hold the incoming message for 0-30 seconds. If there's no attention paid to certain information which is present in the short-term memory, then it gets wiped out. Information is first encoded at primary memory which is, the short-term memory, for it to be stored and retrieved, the information needs to be rehearsed and then it is sent to the secondary memory, also known as long-term memory. Primary memory does not only hold information for a shorter duration, but also, it does not have enough capacity to hold information. When the information is rehearsed and stored in our long-term memory, we are able to retrieve information when required.
Learning on the other hand is a process which involves modifying a certain behaviour. Learning does not only include, encoding, storage and retrieval of information but it requires to execute or implement the behaviour which is previously learnt. Learning does not only focus on remembering information that has been learnt, the information needs to be put to use. It exercises the cognitive aspects to implement learning that has taken place previously and use it in a similar or a new situation.
