Question

What kinds of images of different forms of parenting (e.g., single-parenting, adoptive parenting, grandparenting) are portrayed in the media? How are these images similar to or different from reality? Some forms of parenting are still stigmatized in U.S. society (e.g., single-parenting, adoptive parenting, not parenting). Why do you think there is a stigma attached to these forms of parenting? What are some of the consequences of these stigmas? What messages regarding divorced and blended families are portrayed in the media? How accurate are these images?

Explanation / Answer

Most of the time media projects a picture perfect family with parents and two children but in reality, industrialization and women empowerment have resulted in many different forms of family such as single parent because of the live-in relationship before marriage and divorce, grandparent family due to the death of the parents either in war, accident or illness and adoptive family because people are impotent to have children or lost their children.

Most of the time, the normal family with two parents and biological children is accepted as the normal family and all the others are stigmatized as abnormal or unusual. In my opinion, with all the freedom the LGBTQ group is gaining now-a-days, the women empowerment and the technological advancement all have resulted in the acceptance of all the different forms of the family and parenting. Again this acceptance depends on whether it’s a developed country and whether it’s individualistic and materialistic culture.
