Explanation / Answer

“5. The statement about NCVS was deemed false because it does not fully describe the nature of the population from which the data is collected. The statement thus only gives partial information which can be misleading and thus it was deemed as a false statement about NCVS. It mentions that it is a survey based on offenders. However, the data about personal characteristics of the offender( age, sex, race, physical appearance, etc) and the nature of the crime( time and place of occurance, injury incurred, any economic consequences etc.) are gathered based on self-report inventories that are taken from the victims of crime rather than the offenders ( as claimed in the sentence)themselves.

in order to make the statement true, it can rephrased to include information such as that the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the nation's primary source of information on criminal victimization. It collects data from a nationally representative sample of about 135,000 households, composed of nearly 225,000 persons, on the frequency, characteristics, and consequences of criminal victimization in the United States. It thus takes into account victim experiences with criminal justice system in the United States and analyses the possible relationship between the nature of crime and the characteristics of the offenders based on the victim’s reports.

13. This statement is false because self reports are a popular method of obtaining information about the personal characteristics of offenders from offenders themselves. Thus, instead of acting as a weakness, this is more of a strength of self report measures in yielding rich data about offender’ personal characteristics as it may link to the crime.

In order to rectify this Andy make the stamens true, the sentence can reframed as ‘ the greatest advantage of self report measures is that’s they provide relevant information about the characteristics of the offenders such as their own attitudes and beliefs about making a criminal offence.’

18. According to research on the treatment of girls in the juvenile justice system, Girls who reach puberty at an early age were viewed as being at a higher risk for delinquency because they had more contact with older boys. In female criminal cases, later criminal tendency is highly correlated with current levels of social support. Thus, the given statement is false and in order to make it true, it can be rephrased as :

“ females were committed to a correctional facility between the ages of 14 and 16”.
