Question
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zihdr36WVi4 (copy and paste in search bar, short video on Treating Depression)
Based on the video, respond with your thoughts on the use of antidepressants to treat people with Major Depressive Disorder. After watching Kirsch’s work, who do you think should be treated with antidepressants? when is/are antidepressants appropriate? Do you see any problems with his research or with the individuals who are critical of his research? Or whatever thoughts you have on his video
Explanation / Answer
Antidepressants, according to Kirsch should be taken by people who are severely affected but people who are mildly affected do not have any effect from the chemicals and it’s only a placebo effect. It could be taken only when one is not able to function normally because of depression. People who are critical such as psychiatrics, drug companies and officials say something different by pointing out the number of people who take anti-depressants and get better. Kirsch on the other hand, says that they haven’t accounted the negative side effects of those drugs.
I think, it’s all in the head and it’s not with the medicine. Almost all the drugs have side effects and anti-depressants too have their side effects. Treating depression with drugs is like treating the skin but leaving what lies beneath the skin. In this case, the root cause of the depression is not addressed but only the physical outcomes of those problems are addressed through the drugs.
