Explanation / Answer

An example of conditioned stimulus is that with response to food. As a person would be looking at food, they would begin to salivate. In this case, the smell of food would be referred to as unconditioned stimulus, which leads to a feeling of hunger. Suppose, when a person smell’s their favourite food, they would also hear a whistling sound. Though, smell of food and whistling are unrelated, if the whistling sound is done as many times as the smell of food is observed, even without the food, the sound alone would trigger a response.

Here, the sound of the whistle is referred to as the conditioned stimulus, and salivating in response to the whistle is conditioned response. Salivating with the smell of food is unconditioned stimulus.
