Richard Brislin describes four additional benefits, or what he calls functions, of prejudice,which are as follows- 1) satisfies a utilitarian or adjustment function-Receive a reward or avoid punishment for him/herself when displaying prejudicial tendencies toward another. Example; When I make prejudicial remarks about others in order to be accepted or liked by others. Which I did at my workplace,having my irrational beliefs about a particular race,and expressing them to my group who held similiar beliefs,and just to be included in that group since they were really good at their work I said similar things like them. 2) serves as an ego-defensive (protects self esteem)-This is to protect one’s own self esteem by putting down others who make us feel less worthy.For example, When I was not successful in the project that was given to me by my boss then, I did project my self-image by belittling those who had been successful in other projects because that made me feel less worthy. 3) value-expressive function-When someone is extremely ethnocentric their prejudicial attitudes towards other is a way of expressing how correct they feel their own values are. 4) knowledge function (prejudice attitudes that people hold because of their need to have the world neatly organized & boxed into categories-This notion suggests that people have a need to organize and simplify the world; thereby placing individuals in certain categories helps them categorize the world by increasing predictability.
