Question

If we look around us we are at times surrounded by chaos, violence, sex, lies…and video tapes (or viral videos) which seem to sensationalize the “darker” side of mankind/ womankind.   The Seven Deadly Sins are believed to be the true roots of evil which threaten the salvation of human beings in many faiths. The Seven Deadly sins are: Anger (Wrath), Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Pride and Sloth. These sins are believed to be deadly because they deprive us of our humanity.   Using Durkheimian language, the sins are a reflection of a loss of social integration and social regulation (control) leaving people to feel alienated from one another. People can become so consumed by these sins that the sins may replace the seven virtues of salvation (prudence, justice, restraint, courage, faith, hope and love or charity). But, does American culture cultivate the seeds of sin?

In this assignment, you are being asked to analyze the American culture in relation to one of the four seven deadly sins listed below. Explanation / Answer

The sin that would be discussed here is Gluttony. Gluttony is a situation of excessive eating and drinking. It is one of the most tolerated sins in America. Stuffed stomachs and crash diets have become a lifestyle of most Americans.People hardly associate overeating with sin. Gluttony is a concern in U.S. today, because nearly 67% of Americans are obese.Another issue is that overeating leads to unequal distribution of food where the gluttons eat more, leaving less for rest. They are generally ruled by the pleasure principal, Id,

The language of this sin is over consumption of food, so much so that it deprives another being from the necessary requirements of food.

Commonly used words related to gluttony are greediness, overeating, overconsumption, binge eating, etc.

The basic norm is that when food is eaten beyond regulation. The second norm for gluttony would be when food is wasted from the plate. Thirdly, when one group of people overeats leaving less food for another.

Gluttonous behaviour is excessive consumption of food and drinks due to temptation.

From Robin William's Core American Values, gluttony is related to equal opportunity. This is because, gluttony leads to breaking of this value, where the gluttons get more food and the rest get less.

Some products that reflect this sin are junk foods, eating competitions and challenges, drinking fests, etc.
