How have those choices affected those relationships? 6.In general, how do you think your relationships are affected when you use mediated communication rather than face-to-face communication?

Explanation / Answer

1) Percentage of time that is spent communicating through mediated channels and face to face is almost a fifty-fifty. While we are surrounded by people and are continuously having conversations, either actively or passively, we are also virtually connected to many more people through the screens of our phones and computers.

2) The preference generally depends upon certain factors such as the content to be discussed, the person with whom the discussion is happening, the urgency, etc. In most cases only extremely urgent or formal (such as a job interview or a formal date) conversations take place face to face, nowadays.

3) Mediated channels are chosen when non-verbal cues are not required. Sometimes when conversations require measurement of words and not mere spontaneous reactions, in those cases too a mediated channel of communication is preferred. Also, when conversation are extremely formal with people whom we have not met before, an e-mail is the best way of communication.Moreover, text messages and social media forums are chosen when we wish keep in constant touch with our family and friends.

4) Yes, definitely it is situation-specific.

5) Choosing the correct mediated form of communication generally enhances relationships. For example, an email to a boss is generally preferred over a personal visit to their house. However, a video chat without consent is not preferred in a formal situation. Similarly, friends or families often engage in video chats in order to keep in touch and not really send emails.

6) Mediated communications are good, however, nothing can replace a face to face communication where actions speak louder than words.
