4. What is the mythology regarding livestock and the health of grasslands?
5. What is the devastating state of many National Parks in the U.S.?
6. In your own words, please describe the relationship between livestock and grasslands.
Explanation / Answer
1. The perfect storm that we are facing is the result of the rising population, land that is turning to desert, and climate change.
2. In humid environments, desertification does not occur as it is almost impossible to create vast areas of bare ground. This is because the presence of humidity ensures that the land is covered up by nature quickly.
3. Savory highlights that most of the soil in grasslands is bare and covered with a crust of algae, leading to increased runoff and evaporation. That is the cancer of desertification.
4. The mythology regarding livestock and the health of grasslands is that desertification is caused by livestock, mostly cattle, sheep and goats, overgrazing the plants, leaving the soil bare and giving off methane.
