Explanation / Answer

2) Edema is defined as collection of fluid in the interstitial space or body cavities. Clinically edema manifests as a swelling. Pain is the common symptom of edema.

Edema occurs in hypertension especially in the lower limbs due to increased hydrostatic pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of blood capillaries which causes extravasation of fluid from the blood vessel to the interstitial space.

Edema occurs in protein deficiency conditions like kwashiorkor because of decrease in colloidal osmotic pressure. Because, the concentration of albumin is lower in such individuals, the plasma diffuses through the capillaries and accumulates in interstitial space.
