Question

Scenerio:

"You're a business manager with an employment contract, married and have two kids. The contract requires you to work solely for your employer and use your talents to attract new clients to the business. If you begin attracting more clients than you believe your employer can reasonably handle, with the intention of diverting that excess business elsewhere and taking the commission. The current employer would never know about the diversion of business since they have more than enough business to handle now."

What criticisms might be raised with each of the 4 standards in the Ethical Lens Inventory and that perspective in general?

Explanation / Answer

The issue here is ethical and if the current employer finds out the breach in contract then the issue may also turn legal. According to the contract I cannot work for any other organization and if I do then it will be considered as a breach of contract and here if I help the other organizations then I am doing a breach. If we consider the 4 standards in the ethical lens inventory, we will observe that:

1. Rights/Responsibilities - The work of the individual should benefit others and in this case it may do the same but contract is breached.
2. Results - Emotion and intuition has no place here because I will doing it for additional money which is not as per the guidelines of this lens.
3. Relationship - The powerless should be given equal opportunity but in this case, the other organization is not at all powerless.
4. Reputation - This will actually affect the reputation of the individual and also that of the employer he is helping and should not be practiced.
