Question
If blood volume is 5 liters and red blood cells make up 45% of blood, the total volume taken up by red blood cells is _____, what is the volume of blood not including the red blood cells? _____ Mr. Smith weighs 50 kg. He is suppose to receive a dose of drugs at the rate of 2 mg/kg hour. Assuming the drug is diluted in a saline solution at a concentration of 5 gram per liter. How much saline should Mr. Smith get each hour? _____ If your urinary filtration rate is 125 ml /min, how much blood is filtered each day? _____Explanation / Answer
22. The answer will be 20ml/ hour.
Mr. Smith's body weight is 50 Kg and he is suppose to receive a dose of drugs at the rate of 2mg/Kg hour.
Since the dose required in a hour is 2mg / Kg. Therefore the dose required by Mr. Smith is 100mg in a hour (because total body weight is 50 Kg thats why total dose required in a hour = 50 x 2 =100mg.)
The drug is dissolved in saline solution at a concentration of 5 gm / Ltr (5000mg/ ltr).
Since 1 ltr of solution contain 5000mg of drug.
Therefore the volume of solution for 1 mg of drug = 1/ 5000 ltr
Therfore the volume of solution for 100 mg = 1 x 100/ 5000 = 0.02 ltr = 20ml.
Hence the volume of drug solution required by Mr. Smith will be 20 ml per hour.
