Question
You are in an ambulance taking a young adult male to Springville Hospital Emergency Department. The patient was at a barbecue cutting some ribs when the knife slipped and cut him in the stomach. Emergency Department physicians note that the patient is complaining of chest pain and stomach pain around the knife wound. The patient is short of breath, coughing, and breathing rapidly. He is also showing redness and extreme swelling just below the waist. The ambulance crew is somewhat perplexed by the fact that the patient is showing breathing problems as a result of this wound. The knife wound has altered the body’s structure. It is the job of emergency department physicians and medical laboratory personnel to determine which parts of the body are being affected. Then, they must determine what is causing the problems and whether the symptoms are all related to the knife injury. Which part(s) of the body may be damaged?
Explanation / Answer
As the patient had a knife cut around the stomach due to which he is having chest pain, shortness of breath and rapid breathing. It might due to puncture in one of the lungs which is causing this trouble.
Also, the redness around the waist would be due to the injury to the spleen due to which there is a huge loss of blood.
