Question
2. Your grandfather has enjoyed very good vision for most of his 73 years. He still likes to read the newspaper to stay up to date on current events. You realize one day that he holds his paper at a distance of 13 inches from his face, which makes his arm tired after a while. You think he might benefit from some reading glasses What condition is your grandpa mostly likely suffering from (in medically correct terminology)? 2a. What power of glasses should he look for? (Round to the nearest 0.25 power.) (1) 2bExplanation / Answer
A) Condition Grasndfather is likely suffering from is Presbyopia.
What is Presbyopia-is the loss of ability to see near objects(eg:reading)causing farsightedness.
What causes Presbyopia-Related to aging ,develops due to gradual thickening and loss of flexibility of the natural lens of the eye ,causing them to be less elastic and also decreases the elasticity of muscle fibres surrounding the eye ,resulting in farsightedness
light is not focused on the retina but behind the retina cauising difficulty to see and read the near objects.
How to prescribe Presbyopia glasses
Measure working distance -what distance is grandfather comfortable reading the newspaper ,as given it is 13 inches (33cm)
Now as we know the working distance we can tell the grandfather to read the N8 line on the template by changing the lenses and prescribing the lenses with right power .
As we cannot work out with the lens changing and check how the Grandfather responds better to which power
we will prescribe lens based on his age and prescribe power of +2.5
Types of presbyopic glasses
1)Single,multifocal,bifocal
2b.What power of glasses should he look for +2.5 Bifocal lens
disadvantage of single lens-near vision is clear but distance vision will be blurred.
advantage of bifocal lens -near and distance vision will be clear.
