Question
Below are estimates of stress within normal bone (two leftmost images) during walking and strairclimbing. The two rightmost images are estimates of stress within the bone and the implant under the same two conditions (walking and stairclimbing). The goal of this problem is to show you the effects that implants can have on loading within surrounding tissues and to demonstrate to you the fact that implants generally experience non-uniform stresses.
a). Compare the walking conditions with and without an implant. What do you notice about the density of the turquoise blue regions in the two images? What color (stress level) has taken the place of some of the turquoise regions in the implant case?
b). Compare the stair climbing conditions with and without an implant. What do you notice about the density of the green regions in the two images? What color (stress level) has taken the place of some of the green regions in the implant case?
c).Where are the regions of highest stress in the implant? Would you have expected this stress distribution within the implant? Why or why not?

A1. The density of turquoise color indicated less stress and uniform distribution in both the images.
Comparison of walking condition with and without implant:
Without implant: As seen in the image, the stresses in a bone without an implant are equally distributed and hardly concentrated at one small tip of the bone. This means that the natural bone is structured in a very robust way and intuitive way so as to distribute the stresses uniformly.
With implant: There blue color is unevenly distributed in the bone with the implant which states that implants may not be able to mimic a natural bone and the stresses are not able to spread across uniformly. The stress is more concentrated at the edge of the implant itself.
Green to yellowish green color has taken place in case of a bone with implant.
A2. The green color indicates more stress and it's non-uniform distribution across the bone.
The stress levels showed by green color while stair climbing in a normal bone is concentrated to one side of the shaft and a little over the head of the bone while considering the same case in terms of an implant, there are additional stresses experienced by the bone with implant more the edges too over and above the shaft region.
A3. The region of highest stress in an implant is the head region of the bone where the implant is fitted. The stress distribution within the implant should be uniform ideally but it is non-uniform and cannot be controlled effectively.
