Question

2) 1pt. Discuss 2 advantages of underwater weighing over other body composition methods. 3) Ipt and 2 limitations. Make sure to specifically deseribe how each of the 2 limiations would affect 4) 1pt. If your subject came back to the lab for another underwater weighing after a long run, where he body composition. or she lost 2kg of glycogen and water, how would this affect the estimation of% body fat, fat mass and fat free mass? Discuss the trend for each of these (increase, decrease, or no change), you don't have to do the calculations

Explanation / Answer

2. Underwater weighing is now considered to be one of the best ways to weigh body composition. Its application in health industry with focus on athletes and treatment of obeisity is now being used. There are few advantages and disadvantages however:

Advantages:

a. Time taken to conduct the test is short and results are accurate. In todays scenario with most patients and healthcare professionals relying on faster and accurate results, this option is very good.

b. Side / adverse effects are nil. Even if a patient has had surgery for cardiac complications and have inserted pacemakers, this method can still be used as it does not interfere with the electrical impulses generated by the pacemaker.

3. Disadvantages:

a) Sometimes if the patient does not completely exhale then there may be residual volume of air that may remain in the pulmonary cavities. This will effect body composition calculation and there will be slight decrease in weight and will be a biased value.

b) level of patient hydaration (water levels) will produce random error sometimes, as a result values may differ on different occasions.

4. Since glycogen is a stored form of fat in the body, in this case scenario the % of body fat and fat mass will decrease since fat is inversely proportional to body mass. However fat free mass will remain the same.
