Question
With aging, the speed of reflex responses slow down. The decreased rate or response is believed to result from many age-related changes in the nervous system. List at least three possible explanations for slower reflexes in the elderly. I want all of your proposed mechanisms to be related to nerve transmission, from graded potential formation to changes in the synapse. I.E. no discussion of areas outside nerve transmission. E.G. bad backs, sore feet or dead nerves (crushed or somehow lost). For each proposed mechanism explain how it effects ion concentrations across the membrane, neurotransmitters and postsynaptic action potenials.
Explanation / Answer
