13) Compact bone is denser and stronger when compared to spongy bone. It is found under the periosteum and in diaphysis of long bones. It provides structure and support. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon or Haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified matrix called lamellae which contain osteocytes. Running down the center of each osteon is the Haversian canal, which contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels. These vessels and nerves branch off at right angles through Volkmann’s canals, to extend to the periosteum and endosteum.
Spongy bone is also known as cancellous bone. They are present in the medullary cavity of long bones. Here, the osteons are not arranged in concentric circles. The main function of spongy bone is haematopoesis.
