Question
A 15 year male sought consult because of pallor, weakness and dyspnea. Medical history revealed that the mother is anemic and the father has a mild form of hemophilia.
A CBC was ordered which revealed leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia and erythrocytopenia.
A pulse oximeter test was done and showed hypoxia. The patient was given a local anesthetic prior to the collection for bone marrow for testing.
The test revealed results suspicious of myeloma or leukemia. Post-anesthesia, the patient became tachycardic and cyanotic and succumbed to anaphylaxis. Testing showed that the patient was hypersensitive to the anesthesia.
